The Amish school shooting followed three other school shootings. Three weeks earlier on Sept. 13, Kimveer Gill, 25, entered Dawson College in Montreal and began shooting randomly. One person died and 19 others were injured before Gill fatally shot himself. On Sept. 27, Duane Roger Morrison, 53, entered Platte Cannon High School and claimed to be carrying a bomb. He took six female students hostage in a classroom and sexually assaulted them, later releasing four. When police broke into the room, he fatally shot one hostage, Emily Keyes, and killed himself. Two days later, at Weston High School in Cazenovia, Wisc., ninth-grader Eric Hainstock entered the school with a shotgun and handgun. A custodian wrestled away the shotgun from Hainstock, but the student pulled out the handgun. When the school principal, John Klang, confronted him in the hallway, Hainstock shot him three times, including in the head. Bleeding from his injuries, Klang still pinned Hainstock to the ground and others held him down until police arrived. Klang later died in the hospital.
